Last month, thousands of US inmates launched a nationwide protest, on the 45th anniversary of the Attica Prison uprising. This protest was to bring notice to the "legalized slavery inside correctional facilities" and to end it. Apparently even though the 13th amendment bans slavery, it allows prisoners to work for little to no pay. So these thousands of prisoners are striking against this the unfair and dehumanizing rules. In hopes of morally better treatment.
I understand the idea of giving the prisoners work to do, in order to be productive. But it seems useless to me if there's no sort of positive reinforcement for it. Especially when the work is strenuous enough for it to seem just plain messed up for there to be no sort of fair treatment. Many people connect this to some form of slavery and I can see why they believe that. People are being put to work with little to no pay at all. Which serves no purpose to their side and is just unfair overall. I understand that there would be very many mixed feelings about the prisoners and the treatment they deserve. And I'm very curious to all of those ideas.

I agree. Their just making it look this work is just helpful, but it's just another way of slavery.
ReplyDeleteKiri Luckey: I agree also, what they are doing to the prisoners is practically slavery.
ReplyDeleteThe work they put the prisoners up to should defiantly be rewarding in some way, relating to either their physical health or mental or possibly even the period of time they continue to stay in prison. The extremely low pay should be made aware to our country and the action that we could take in that could potentially create a trend or chan reaction that could influence other low-paying businesses.
ReplyDeleteWoooow this is just tragic I totally agree when you stated "Which serves no purpose to their side and is just unfair overall," and I would also like to know how people think prisoners should be treated.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think positive reinforcement is important and this situation is upsetting.
