SUMMARY:
Margaret Boemer, a mom of two children, went into her third pregnancy with a baby that was diagnosed with Sacrococcygeal teratomaThis is a rare birth defect that effects one out of every 35,000 babies. It causes a large tumor to grow and steals the baby's blood supply. Lynlee, the name later given to the fetus, was becoming more and more ill, and the doctors and parents made the unanimous decision to go through surgery. The plan was to take out Lynlee and remove the tumor as quickly as possible, and then return the fetus to be born when scheduled. Cass, the doctor performing the surgery, exclaims, "It's kind of a miracle you're able to open the uterus like that and seal it all back and the whole thing works". Boemer, despite being on bedrest and in pain until it was time for Lynlee to come out for good, she claims that "it was worth every pain"! So far, Margaret's baby is doing well, and she is completely normal!
ANALYSIS:
Before reading this article, I had never read or heard of doctors performing such a risky surgery or having a baby being taken out of the womb just to be put back in. I've seen it occur a few times on television shows, but have never known a surgery like this to be physically possible. But, through Cass's performance on this surgery, it can give hope to future doctors, parents, and cases similar to this that there will be success in their situation as well! As well as providing hope for future potential parents, this story demonstrates improvements and advancements in the modern medical field.
