Nadia Blanton-Improved U.S. and Cuban Relations Create A surge of Cuban Migrants

Summary: There has been an increasing number of Cubans attempting to make it to Florida. part of the reasoning behind this because of there is a favoring immigration policy specifically for Cubans known as "wet foot/dry foot,"Cubans caught at sea ("wet feet") are sent back home. While those who reach American soil ("dry feet") can stay legally in the U.S., get benefits and are put on a fast track towards citizenship. This policy was put in place during the Cold war and was to protect fleeing political persecution under the communist Castro regime. However, today cubans are coming to America primarily for economic reasons. Now critics are questioning the "wet foot/dry foot" policy and whether it is necessary or not. Which is causing the increases of immigration by Cubans.

  1. Is clearly that many Latin immigrants are seeking for new opportunities that their native country can't offer due to the economic and political crisis many Latin countries suffer.

  3. I support the "wet foot/ dry foot" policy. Whenever people leave their country, many do it because of a difficult situation or the promise of better opportunities. America is built from immigrants from countries all over the world. I think it is only right to uphold the "American Dream" and give the opportunity to anyone that wishes to take part.

  4. I don't see the reason to still have this policy. Of course these people wish for a new life and opportunities, but the "wet foot/dry foot" is outdated and unneeded. There should at least be a new policy to account for the movement in power of Cuba.
