Summary: A new species of dinosaur was discovered in western Australia. Paleontologists are calling it the Savannasaurus. It has a long neck and tail, and a total body length of roughly half a basketball court. They believe the dinosaur lived on earth about 95 million years ago. The bones were originally discovered back in 2005 but they were not assembled until 2015. They were then stored for a year, and then tested to find the species. The team now has a partial skeleton of this ancient beast. What's so interesting about this dinosaur is how unlike it is from any other. They believe it migrated from South America when the continents were merged, about 100 million years ago. This discovery is significant in paleontology and scientists hope this will help other fossils be identified.
Analysis: I find it really interesting that scientists are still always finding new things about the Earth's past. I think many people believe that we know everything there is to know about the past, and tend to focus on the future. This could relate to when William Buckland discovered the first dinosaur, a Megalosaurus, in 1824 because they are both significant advances in paleontology.

Wow that's so cool! I wonder what other interesting things we will discover about our planet in the future.
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy that we are still learning new things about the Earth's past. Especially since are so advanced. I am curious to see what our technology will reveal to us about the past in the future.
