Women Across Latin America Protest After The Rape And Murder Of A Teenage Girl - Emma Reyna

Summary:

On October 19th in Bueneos Aires Argentina ten thousands of women gathered to protest the gender- related violence that had unfortunately occurred  the previous weeks before. The group of protesters who had oragnized this event also known  as Ni Una Menos, meaning not one less, planned this event in order to raise awareness for crime prevention and justice for people who have been sexually asulted. This event in particular was caused by a huge spur and outrage of Argentines who had heard the news of a rape and murder of sixteen year old Lucia Perez. It was no ordinary case of rape and murder in fact she was drugged by her murders along with suffering from inhumane sexual agression which ultimately triggered her death. Not only did that happen to her but her death was set up in a way that it seemed that she killed herself from an overdose which adds to the atrociouness of the case. In the honor of her memory and to stop such treatment and violence to women many people marched towards the Historic Plaza De Mayo holding signs of protest referring to the message they were trying to convey. This event  was also known as "Black Wednesday"since women on that day dressed in black to symbolize their mourning over the lives lost in such ways as Lucia Perez did.

Analysis and Synthesis:  Before I read this article I had no absolute prior knowledge toward this matter and once I read it I was astonished at such a movement. As someone who has had relations with sexual assault seeing that they raised such importance to such a subject in such a way which was quite powerful amazed me. And thus led me to conclude and connect to a similar incident that had also occurred not too recently ago in Brazil in the month of May this year. The case followed the rape of a 16 year old Brazilian girl in which she was culturally raped by 33 men. In prostest women strewed underwear on the beach of Rio de Janeiro and wore inked red hand marks on their faces in order to symobolize the ways in a girl was sexually assualted.

  1. It's very encouraging to see brave women coming together to fight such an important battle. It's a shame a young woman has to get attacked and murdered for the issue to receive some attention, but sadly that's how our society works.

  3. I agree that it is sad that we have to wait for something to happen before these movements are created. Hopefully these movements will stop the assault towards women.
