Montana judge defends 60-day sentence in child incest case
Summary: The public has recently called for the removal of a judge who gave a 60 day sentence to a man who confessed to repeatedly raping his 12-year-old daughter. He decided on this sentence based on what he deemed was a low risk of a repeat offense and a high likelihood of reintegration into society. The wife and the mother of the defendant both vouched for him and said that the standard 25-year prison sentence was not the correct solution. Multiple people have called for an extended sentence and the removal of the judge for his actions.
Analysis: Following the Brock Turner case earlier this year the public has really been cracking down on sexual assault cases. I don't know how I feel about people being persecuted by public opinion and shamed to such a degree. If the judicial system really did its job then the media and public wouldn't have to take things into their own hands so often. This can be synthesized to the Brock Turner case and other sexual assault cases that have been in the news recently.
I have never heard of this case before but it is very interesting! I can not believe that our country has come to this where the US court system is not doing its job correctly.
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy to think the U.S court system cannot do its job correctly! Checks and balances needs to be more efficient in setting limits for the three branches.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about the media having to take things into their hands. These days, more and more court cases and rulings are being projected out to the public, and people are disagreeing with them.
