Young Boy Pleads to Not Allow His Mom Out of Jail by Shelby Linker, 8th period

Bradyn Takachi, 10, was traumatized at age 4, along with his younger sister, Brooklynn, who was 15 month old at the time, when they both witnessed their mother murdering their father by stabbing him in the heart with a kitchen knife. The incident allegedly started when the two had gotten into an argument then their mother, Shannon Smith, stabbed their father, Robbie Takach. Smith was found guilty in 2010 for the voluntary manslaughter of her husband (2009) and sentenced to 10 years in prison. With a little more than half of the sentenced time passed, Smith could be released soon. Bradyn took it upon himself to appeal to the judge and court by writing a letter, pleading them to not release his mother. "Dear Judge Peeler, I feel that my mom should stay in prison because I seen her stab my dad clean through the heart with my sister in his arms... Life for me would be 10 times better if mom didn't kill my dad. That took a big amount of happiness out of my and my sister's lives.. I think it would be better for me and my sister if my mom would stay in prison because I'm afraid of her. I have seen what she did to my dad," Bradyn wrote in his letter. Bradyn and Brooklynn are currently staying with grandmother.

It is truly tragic that this incident occurred but even more so that two young children had to witness it. I really respect Bradyn for speaking up about how he feels on the situation. I hope the judge and jury take into account his and his sister's experience and feelings and refuse to let her out early. I'm not sure if I really agree with keeping her in jail for her whole life but if she were to be allowed out she shouldn't be allowed to be anywhere near her children due to their fear of her. This case reminds me of almost every other senseless murder that happened because of they disagreed with one another and one of them got violent. I hope that this young boy and his sister get their wish, they shouldn't have had to see what they saw or see her ever again if that's what they want.

  1. That's scary and if I was a child and my Mom did that I'm pretty sure I'ddo the same thing it's understandable that he is scared.

  2. Wow, that must be very scary for the children for them to be scared of their own mom. He was very brave to speak out about it. I hope authorities take the appropriate measures to keep him and his sister safe.

  3. I totally respect the son's choice to write this letter, because he understandably fears his mother and I would probably do the same thing. -claudia Anthony

  4. people are honestly insane sometimes. I've never heard of such an intense story like this but its sad that I'm honestly not surprised at whats being going on in this world recently. i agree and i hope that these kids get what they wish so they never have to see her again because what she did was awful.

  5. The son was brave to be so bold in this situation. I hope the mother learns from this and doesn't literally kill her son for saying that. That would probably be my biggest concern if I was in the boy's shoes.
