Carlos Joglar- New Spotlight On Sexual Misconduct By Officers

New accounts from women talking about sexual abuse they have faced from officers have begun to spark a new realization that officers have also been using their badges and places of power to sexually abuse women. In a six year span, there have been around 1,000 officers reported who have lost their jobs due to sexual misconduct, including charges of rape, possession of child pornography, and other misdemeanors. One officer, Daniel Holtzclaw, despite having over a dozen allegations against him, has finally been taken into custody and will be given a trial after a women accused him of sexually abusing her. After forcing her to give him oral sex, she went to a clinic to gather DNA and she finally had a case. He has pleaded 'not guilty' to the accusations.

1,000 cops losing their jobs over sexual misdemeanors in 6 years seems like a small number. However, that number is undoubtedly an undercount. Some states, despite having officers with sexual abuse charges against them, do not fire their cops. New York and California were unable to give data because they do not have a system that accounts cops with charges of sexual misdemeanors. There is obviously major police abuse going on in this country, and with every issue that has or has not been uncovered, it seems to me their needs to be a reform with the entire system. Even after being called out for the innocent killings of too many African Americans and the development of riots, like Ferguson, officers still abuse their power. Obviously, not all cops are bad, but it's ENOUGH cops. That's my issue. TOO MANY cops, even. Now that these are no longer accidents, but statistics. We need to call for reform to every police department in America or one of us could be the next statistic.

  1. I totally agree with your analysis, this is a terrible problem that needs to be fixed. This kind of abuse from cops happens way too often and it's very serious.
