The U.S. Refuses Syrian Refugees by Brenna Hale(6th Period)

In light of the recent attacks in Paris some states in U.S. are no longer allowing the immigration Syrian refugees for security reasons. The government is not completely sure if this is legal. President Obama has stated that the American people must do their part to help the victims of this civil war. The governor of Alabama, among the states that have rejected refugees, said he, "will not place Alabamians at even the slightest possible risk of an attack on our people". it is being investigated whether or not states can legally block these refugees from coming into their state. It appears that they cannot, but they can make it difficult for the organizations that help them settle in.

In the article it was stated that one of the perpetrators in the attacks was a Syrian refugee who illegally entered Europe. It's easy to see why this would get our government in a fuss, but that doesn't give them an out when they are pointing their fingers at the whole entire country. One group of extremists does not represent one people as a whole. Plus, our country does not know what it is like for those over there living through a war every day, being in constant fear. In U.S. history this event relates to the mass immigration of Irish and Germans to the U.S. in the 1800s. Though these groups were not fleeing war in their home countries, like the Syrians, they were not well liked and misunderstood in their new home country.

  1. In a scare like this, it's understandable for one to be afraid of terrorists among refugees, but governments need to stay calm and assess these situations as they come.

  2. As the part of the US government, part of your job is to thoroughly weigh all you option in any given situation. By immediately blaming Syrian Refugees, you are completely missing the point of your job. Frankly, it's prejudice. While I know there is always the possibility of danger when it comes to anything but singling out just this group is not trying to protect the state, it's just making assumptions, which again is not doing your job.

  3. This is a tough situation but I do not think America has the right to keep out refugees. This contradicts the start of America and our diversity.
