SNL pays tribute to Paris--Becca Brandt 4th Period

This past Saturday, November 14, Saturday Night Live began their show with a tribute to Paris, instead of their usual funny opening sketch. Cecily Strong, one of the members of the cast, spoke beautifully to the members of Paris saying, in English and French, "We stand with you. Paris is the city of light and here in New York City, we know that light will never go out. Our love and support is with everyone tonight. We stand with you." This tribute is not the first to be done by SNL. After the school shooting in Connecticut in 2012, SNL opened with the Children's chorus singing "Silent Night." After September 11, 2001, SNL opened with firefighters to recognize their work and bravery.

I think it is amazing how much other countries care and respect each other. Despite conflicts and wars in the past, thousands of US citizens, besides the cast of SNL, have reached out to Paris citizens. Despite distance and time zone differences, US citizens are thinking about others, not themselves. Also, the United States is not the only country who is reaching out to Paris. Many people say that people only think about themselves these days, but sometimes I wonder if one country helped another country out in times of tragedy back in the 1700s and 1800s. This doesn't exactly compare to the Paris bombing, but for example, after the Boston Massacre, I never heard or read anything about other countries reaching out to America. Or in times of struggle with the British. This makes me thing that  our world as a whole has really grown up.

  1. That's beautiful how countries can support each other in time of devastation. Saturday Night Live, even though a comedy show, knows when to be serious and how to pay respects.
