Recently, the story has come out about five girls on a mission to become Boy Scouts. They are not satisfied with the Girl Scout program, and want to do more than just sell cookies. Currently they have not been accepted into the program because of their gender, but given the recent strides in the advancement and acceptation of less traditional ideas regarding gender and sexuality, these girls might have a chance. Now, these girls don't want anything more than to be able to participate in the intensive program of the Boy Scouts, far superior to that of the Girl Scouts, they don't want to be seen as boys, or anything else.
In our growingly more accepting world, these girls shouldn't be refused access to the knowledge provided by the Boy Scouts program, just because they're women. Of course those opposed to this would say that the Girl Scouts program is better suited for girls, but that would be saying that all women can do is sell cookies (not that that's the only thing Girls Scouts do), and that men are more capable of higher-level thinking- which is completely untrue and sexist. These 100+ year old programs are outdated, and need to be updated to a point that provides all genders with the same opportunities.

I completely agree with your analysis. I used to be a Girl Scout, and I quit because I was jealous of the Boy Scouts and they got to go camping and learn cool wilderness stuff as my scout group sing songs about never-ending friendships. I think that those girls should be admitted into the boys program, since it's what they want to do.

I agree, the fact that the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts do such contrasting activities shows how gender roles really affect and limit what each gender is assumed to enjoy and be able to do. --Claudia Anthony
