Victoria Garza "A Fourth of College Women Reported Unwanted Sexual Contact, Study Finds"

A recent study done by the American Association of Universities showed that one fourth of women experienced unwanted sexual contact, either forcefully or while incapacitated at some point during their college experience. Numerous colleges nationally were prompted to conduct surveys analyzing the frequency and levels of sexual harassment or misconduct within the schools. These surveys not only showed that women had a higher rate of sexual harassment than men, but also that transgender students had the highest rates over both male and female students.

The frequency of sexual harassment present in college communities is alarming. It is both scary and disgusting that people insist on objectifying, and taking advantage of the bodies of other people. There is no reason for this terrible behavior to be occurring not only in colleges but in any situation. Although they can't completely control these occurrences, it is comforting to know that these colleges are trying to make a difference in their college communities by promoting the safety of their students. This sexual harassment is similar to the abuse inflicted upon slaves by their masters.

  1. I agree that this behavior is unacceptable anywhere, and especially where people should be able to educate themselves and feel safe. It shocks me that these crimes go on daily at a college campus; one would expect college level minds to be past the primitive ways of sexual harassment.

  3. Agh this issue seriously bothers me. I agree it is unacceptable anywhere and at any time, but students should feel safe in an educational space. These incidents also bring down the colleges themselves. Everyone should be educated on safety and respect of others.
