Layla Maynard: 3 Injured in Church Shooting

Summary: A mother, son, and pastor were shot Sunday, September 20, 2015 in a church in Selma, Alabama. James Junior Minter, the son's father, was taken into custody and is facing counts of attempted murder. Minter walked into the Oasis Tabernacle Church and sat down next to the woman, his girlfriend, and her baby boy. The woman was shot in the shoulder and the jaw, and the baby was shot in the hand. They were both taken to Birmingham Hospital. The pastor, after being shot in the leg while trying to take the gun from Minter's hand, was taken to a local Selma hospital.

Analysis: I am somehow not even surprised to see a headline like this anymore. There used to be a certain shock and amazement when seeing these types of articles, and though it's still awful, I feel as though these stories have come up so often it's almost become "normal." We, as a society, as used to seeing these headlines. Shouldn't that tell us something is wrong? Shouldn't the alarming amount of articles like this make us want, make us need, to change something? How many innocent people have to be killed before we figure out how to safely distribute certain weapons?

  1. I remember before sandy hook shooting I used to be really suprised but after that the shootings started becoming more common and eventually lost their shock. What has become of us that it's everyday news that somebody would shoot in a church?

Why would a father try to injure his child? What kind of motives does this man have??

  3. Luckily no one was killed in this event. However this is a very sad event. It says a lot about the sanity of people and our weapon control. -Lia K. 6

  4. Tristin Manus 8th- I am not surprised with this news either. We are becoming used to chaos and tragedy in the headlines and that is not good at all. I am honestly terrified for the human race as a whole.
