Tiger kills zookeeper
by Adrianna Martinez
A senior keeper at the New Zealand zoo died, she was attacked by a male tiger named Oz. Samantha Kudeweh had worked at the zoo for 10 years and was the zoo's curator, responsible for making sure the animals were taken care of properly. Oz is a Sumatran tiger, an endangered species with less that 400 remaining. Oz arrived at the Hamilton zoo in 2013 to be matched with a female tiger, who later had two cubs. The zoo has decided not to euthanize the tiger because he is important to ensure the survival of the Sumatran tigers, and they said there is always a risk for zoo professionals who take care of big cats like Oz. This event is very sad because she was doing what she loved, taking care of animals, but died while doing her job. I believe its good the zoo is not euthanizing Oz, because he plays an important part in the survival of his species.
Lions in general are aggressive animals so zookeepers should understand the risk and take strong percussions when handling them.
ReplyDeleteI think its ridiculous that after someone is killed by an animal people immediately request that the animal be euthanized. If someone is killed by an animal, it is not always the animal's fault, people make mistakes too, and even the slightest mistake when dealing with an animal of the size and ferocity of a tiger could result in loss of life or limb.
ReplyDeleteWow. But I agree zookeepers should know the risk of messing with a lion. Wait not just a lion but any animals and that are aggressive.

ReplyDeleteI would tend to think that I you were around an animal for a significant amount of time it would grow accustomed to you. Something must have really freaked that animal out to cause it to attacked that person.
