Journeys of the ERA by Lydia Petree, 4th Period

Carolyn Maloney, member of the US house of representatives, has been attempting almost all of her career to pass the ERA, or Equal Rights Amendment. The purpose of this amendment would be to guarantee and solidify standards for gender equality once and for all. Recently, she has partnered up with Cynthia Lumis, another rep., from Wyoming. They are both on different sides of the political spectrum but are putting that aside for the sake of feminism and women's rights. The ERA has not had major support since the 70s and the 80s, until Phyllis Shlafley shut it down. This is not at all surprising considering the track record of women in history. They actually had the vote in New Jersey in the 18th century, until lawmakers thought to take it away from them as they were prohibiting African Americans and other "natives" from being able to exercise their political rights. They were not able to take it back until Woodrow Wilson begrudgingly decided that it would be too much of a fuss having women making a mess in front of the White House for suffrage, so he passes the 19th amendment. History shows that in order for us to get the basic human rights we deserve, we'll have to work a bit harder. So that's exactly what we're going to do. This upcoming year in particular, we actually have a chance at a female POTUS. Hillary 2016!
