The Hubble Space Telescope celebrated it's 25th anniversary last week. It was launched on April 24, 1990, from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Ever since, it has been flying 340 miles above Earth, orbiting every 97 minutes.
NASA calls the telescope the "most significant advance in astronomy since Galileo's telescope". With an unobstructed view of our universe, the Hubble Space Telescope has made more than a million observations, taking photographs and collecting data about the planets, stars, and galaxies surrounding our universe. The data collected by the telescope has been used in more than 12,800 scientific papers, making it one of the most prolific scientific instruments ever created.
Hubble is expected to keep taking photographs into the 2030s. NASA has plans to launch a new space-based instrument, the James Webb Space Telescope, in 2018.
It's incredible to see how much technology and scientific knowledge have grown within the past 200 years! From the Industrial Revolution in the 1800s, to the first flight by the Wright Brothers in 1903, to the Space Race in the late 20th century, what we know and what we can discover about our universe has grown exponentially. It's exciting to see how far we've come, and still how far we have to go, in our technological/science/math advancements. As a generation living in such a monumental period of time, we have to be able to use these advancements to our benefit, including in fields such as medicine, education, and ecological conservation.
