NASA's chief scientist, Ellen Stofan, says that she believes we are very close to discovering aliens. With the help of the Hubble Space Telescope, evidence of water has been found on dwarf plantets like Ceres and even one of Jupiter's moons, Europa. She reported that in about 20 to 30 years, the conclusions regarding whether other bodies of life exist will be reached. The aliens may not turn out to be little green men roaming around, but simply microbes. Everyone is getting excited about the future and what is to be discovered.
In regards to APUSH, everything dates back to the beginning of the Space Race (1955-1972). If Sputnik had never been launched and the US had never begun the process of developing their space program, we would never be here. Aliens are a fascinating topic of discussion, and I think that the fact that we have the technology to hopefully make that discovery in the future is remarkable.
