Walter Scott Burial, Lydia Petree, P4

The funeral of US Coast Guard Veteran was this Saturday at W.O.R.D. Ministries Christian Center in Summerville. The service was open to the public and hundreds attended. Scott, parent to four children, was shot to death by a police officer after being pulled over for a broken tail light. Caught on camera by the smartphone of a bystander, there is no question that the police officer committed murder. There were no signs that his life was in danger and this is overt racism. His brother, Anthony Scott, remarked that "God selected his brother as a candidate for change in America." Unfortunately, this case is not on outlier. It is all to common for African American people here in the United States to be the victims of police violence and discrimination. Let's face it, this would never have happened to a white kid with a busted tail light. In all probability, a white kid wouldn't have even been pulled over.

Amadou Diallo, 23, NY, NY, 1999, Malcolm Ferguson, 23, NY, NY, 2000, and Michael Brown, 18, Ferguson, Mo., 2014 are just a few of those killed this century. Not even dipping into passed violence and suffering at the hands of discrimination. But sometimes racism is closer and more powerful than you think, even in the presidency. Richard Nixon himself, president extraordinaire has been quoted as saying that "negro bastards" only wanted to "live like a bunch of dogs" on welfare. Nixon's way of thinking prevailed long before his time and honestly has not gotten much better today. We are slowly working to resolve race relations, and it's going to take time and the ability to work together.

  1. I always have the highest respect and regards for veterans. They're the reason why I stand and say the pledge. They have done so much for our country, so that others can have a chance at living life and enjoying the freedoms that they have.
