Last Saturday morning, a boat capsized off of Northern California. Five men set out at 8:30 am on their 32-foot fishing boat on a crabbing expedition. Only one of the men survived, 66-year-old Phillip Sanchez. The weather was less than ideal; the seas were 9 feet tall and there were winds of 17.5 knots (20 mph). Sanchez was able to survive by clinging on to a rock formation; the others were not as fortunate and were found in the water 40 feet off shore. Officials reported that there were in fact life vests on board, but that no one was wearing one.
Greg Botelho wrote this article for CNN on November 2nd. Before reading this article, I had heard of many incidents similar to this one. The mysterious aspect of this case is the fact that no alcohol or drugs were involved. The boat simply flipped due to a "rogue wave." This article was written to inform people of the details of this tragic event and to emphasize the importance of life vests.
