#ThanksMichelleObama By: Heather McKay
In 2012, Michelle Obama implemented a new policy called "Lets Move!" in hopes to reduce child obesity. The plan included lowering sodium and fat in school lunches and increasing the about of fruits, vegetables, and grains in the meals. However, students are beginning to complain excessively on social media with the hashtag #ThanksMichelleObama about portion size, taste, and texture. From what i see, I can see why the students are upset, however I don't think that Michelle Obama is the one to blame. Yes, she did change things up, however it is the school districts who are in immediate control of these school lunches. If it is a funding issue, then yes that needs to be taken up with the higher powers. On the other hand, these lunches do look really awful and even if the First lady did not directly cause it, she should be doing something to fix it.

She has good intentions because she really wants to help the people. Our districts are the ones who need to make her good intentions possible because she is not the cooking the food.

I think that the result of childhood obesity isn't because of food options in the lunch line, but are rather the result of a changing food industry in America. Food companies are more focused on making food cheap, taste good, and last longer unfortunately that means empty calorie snacks that flood grocery stores. Michelle Obama shouldn't be blamed since she has no control over what districts serve. All she has attempted to do is remind people of proper ways of eating right.
ReplyDeleteI think the students should stop bashing Michelle Obama. She is not intending to hurt the students, she is trying to benefit them. If anything the students should protest against the school or even the district.
