Ahead of a grand jury's decision on whether to indict a police officer in the killing of Michael Brown, Missouri has both called in the National Guard and diminished the role of the Ferguson Police Department.
Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency today as a precaution, he said, in the event of unrest or violence.
It's unknown when the grand jury will hand down a decision on whether to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson for his fatal shooting of Brown, a teen. Prosecutors have suggested the grand jury would be done deliberating in mid- to late November.
Working off that time line, Nixon said, he signed the executive order because of the "possibility of expanded unrest."
He said that people have the right to protest peacefully but that citizens and businesses must be protected from violence and damage.
While I think that the ferguson shootings were bad, I can't help but wonder if there was a deep side of the argument we haven't seen yet. I guess we'll have to wait and see. This reminds me of several other times in U.S. history where the other side was losing and the U.S. ended up winning.

Well, because it was a police officer, he was given sympathy and has a higher chance of getting it easy. Which isn't right. But we've seen it happen multiple times, even though Brown was harmless.
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't understand what the governor is doing.
ReplyDeleteYou ask for peace from the people but call in troops that are ready for a war. It's only going to cause more tension in Ferguson because protestors are going to feel threatened which will only cause retaliation. Then things get very violent and another person might wind up dead and the entire situation will restart itself.
