"4 workers die, 1 hurt in Texas chemical plant leak," - Addison Norman pd 2

This past Saturday 4 workers were killed in a chemical leak at the DuPont plant in La Porte, near Houston. The leak also injured one other employee, but he is expected to recover. Officials predict that the leak occurred around 4 a.m. after residents in the area smelt an odor put off by the leak, but the smell or leak possesses  no dangerous aspects. The chemical released was methyl mercaptan an ingredient in some insecticides that DuPont creates. The true cause for the leak is still unknown.

When employees die in their work place, I connect to the events to the industrial revolution in American at the beginning of the 20th century. During this time water mills made it possible for the US to construct more factories and textile mills. The working conditions in many factories was treacherous, and people were killed or severely injured on the job. As the industrial revolution went on many workers began to go on strike until their workplace had more favorable conditions. Then their is the formation of labor unions in which people came together to demand and ensure their rights.

  2. As new industries and jobs emerge, so do new risks and new challenges. Labor unions help to ensure that workers are not taken advantage of by the corporation they are working for.
