"Buffalo braces for 'toxic brew' of flooding as 7 feet of snow start to melt" - Addison Norman pd 2

In the past weeks Buffalo, New York has received large amounts of snow totaling to 7 feet. The snow had covered streets, homes, and businesses, and the snow build up had already caused roofs to collapse in the area. This week's weather forecast gives an ominous forewarning of what could come. This week meteorologist predict that the temperature could reach 60 degrees. Many fear that the spike in the temperature could result in a drastic ice melt and flooding. 7 feet of snow could turn into 7 feet of ice melt. This ice melt is what people call the "toxic brew," a mixture of ice, snow, water, sewage, dirt, etc. Think about the roofs that collapsed under the weight of the snow, melting snow could add to the weight. Water rescue teams have already been dispatched in the area and are prepared to act. 180,000 sand bags have been shipped in to help. 700,000 people in the area are under a flood warning. The mayor has directed residents to clear their basements to prepare for the worst.

Throughout U.S. History we can always look to geography. For example, in chapters 18 and 19 the class has reviewed some of the deciding factors that led to the civil war; for the most part the textbook looked to economic, political, and social reasons for the civil was. I looked back farther to when the nation was just beginning. In the 13 colonies, colonies were already separated North and South based on geography. The North had rocky soil, rivers, and natural horrors that made the area favorable for industry. The characteristics of the South were mainly the opposite of the North. The South had fertile soil which played a key role in the development of an agricultural economy fueled by slaves. Thus creating a separation between North and South.

  1. This is why I'm happy to live with Texas weather (for once). Hopefully the situation can be controlled and contained.
