Inmates Escape From Madera County Jail, One remains on the Loose By: Nina Bharadwaj, 2nd Period

Five inmates escaped from the Madera County Jail. While four have been captured, one still remains on the loose, Roel Soliz of Chowchilla, California (29 years old). The other four inmates range from age 19 to 33, and all five of them are said to be part of a gang.
Soliz was placed in jail for violating probation, burglary, and substance possession. The others were put in prison for armed robbery, murder attempt, and other various charges. Madera County sheriff, Erica Stuart, has concluded that Soliz may be armed and holds much of a threat.
On Friday evening, all of the prisoners escaped, and they weren't noticed to have disappeared until about an hour later. Stuart stated "We don't know how they got away, all we know is that they took off on foot." This is the second escape to have taken place in a span off three months at this jail. Bryan King, 47, was placed in jail for drug and weapon offenses and was working in the jail's kitchen when he jumped the fence. He had left for a few hours until he was recaptured.

The article was contributed to by the Associated Press and was published on September 21. This date makes the article more threatening knowing that the escape happened recently because Soliz may be armed, and there is no telling of what he may do next. I believe the article was written to inform audiences on a recent threat, and it places a negative influence on the audience because this escape is not the first to have taken place at the Madera County Jail. It shows how this place can not fully be trusted to keep prisoners and violators of the law where they belong. I know I have started to question whether safety is the number one priority here because careless mistakes like this completely contradict the purpose of a punishment in the first place. I did not know much about this subject to begin with, as I believed most jails were capable of keeping prisoners in their place. However, now I am more concerned about this topic because it seems to be a common occurrence.

  1. That's pretty scary, they need to keep a better watch on them.

  2. This is actually really scary. I am so amazed at these criminals and how they manage to escape from prisons that are so heavily guarded. There obviously needs to be more security around prisons because have a watch tower and bob wire doesn't seem to cut it and I hope that they are able to catch the man that is still on the run.
