For the first recorded time since 1852, a man was killed by a black bear in New Jersey. The man, Darsh Patel, was out hiking with four of his friends when the group was attacked by a black bear. The four friends escaped, but, when they regrouped later, they realized Patel was not with them. Within two hours of searching for him, Patel was found by police with the black bear still on sight. The bear was euthanized immediately and contact with Patel's family was attempted. This is the first occurrence of a fatal black bear attack in almost 200 years in New Jersey.
It is very shocking that something like this would happen only 40 miles out of New York. However, with the black bear population booming in the area, it is not so surprising. Ecologically, this increase in population could prove to be beneficial to the area, but human intervention and coexistence is a major concern that must be addressed carefully per conservation laws.

I can't believe that is has been so long since someone was killed by a black bear. I wonder if the person did something to irritate that bear or if he was wearing something that may have caught the bear's eye.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what was the reason it was so long. I feel that people should be prepared an trained for certain ituiations with bears.
ReplyDeleteI'm also shocked that it's been such a long time. Honestly, I think we should just leave them alone.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what provoked the bear to become volatile. Bears typically don't act this way without some sort of reason.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what stimulated the bear into this ferocious act. Humans are slowly beginning to deteriorate their environment and home; the animal may have a sense of retaliation from the hikers intrusion. It is definitely strange how there was a 200 year period of no bear attacks and then all of a sudden there is this incident.
ReplyDeleteWhat a horrible way to die... I suppose we can use this unfortunate situation as a learning experience and now hikers will know how to better prepare themselves for the possibility of an encounter with a bear.
