Teens escape yet again from Nashville detention center - Jack VanGorden 4th pd.

Last Friday, a total of thirteen juveniles from Tennessee's Woodland Hills Youth Development Center escaped the facility. What is even more shocking is that 32 others had escaped earlier this month. As of Saturday morning, 12 of the 13 teens had been recaptured and brought before a judge to receive additional charges. However, one of the escapees remains at large. TCDS released that he is a 16 year old male whose charges already include theft, assault, and now runaway. According to officials, "the department has been rapidly upgrading security".  For example, they have replaced aluminum panels that could be kicked in with steel to reduce the chance of this happening yet another time. The report states that two inmates overpowered a guard while he was making his rounds, took his radio and keys, and after gathering their accomplices, made it through the perimeter gate. Fortunately, only two staff members were injured, and they are reportedly both in great condition.

I found this story pretty shocking but what I found most unbelievable was that this wasn't that the first time that an incident like this has occurred. Hopefully they will realize that security needs to be tightened so that something like this doesn't happen again.

  3. How can you relate this to APUSH? Think about AP PARTS. What is our history of the American juvenile detention system?
