Last week Omar Gonzalez, 42, jumped over the White House fence and invaded the White House. Officials had previously said that Gonzalez was tackled just inside the front doors. However, a new report by Washington Post states that Gonzalez overpowered an officer at the front door and made it all the way to the East Room before being tackled by guards.
Gonzalez was allegedly carrying a knife, and had a hatchet and ammunition inside of his car. Secret Service is being questioned and prompted for allowing the man to breach security and get so far inside the White House.
Apparently White House staff had requested for the alarm system to be muted, and the guard at the front door was not immediately notified of the intruder.
When I first read this article last week, I hadn't thought much of it: I assumed the man was just a radical guy who wanting to see the inside of the White House. But with this new report, and the fact that he had weapons in his possession, suddenly I am much more alert and shocked at the lax state of security. Why was the alarm muted in the first place? What if Gonzalez had been able to initiate a serious attack? Hopefully the Secret Service will fix this lag in communication and be more on top of the security.
