Following the largest Climate Change Demonstration to date on Sunday, hundreds of protesters again marched in New York, with the ultimate goal of flooding into the area outside the New York Stock Exchange. The demonstrators were stopped by barricades backed by the entire NYCPD, as including officers on horseback. The purpose of the demonstration was to protest the continued trend of fossil fuel companies making large amounts of money at the expense of the planet, causing global warming and pollution such as smog. The demonstration the day before, dubbed the "Peoples' Climate March", was the largest of its kind, with tens of thousands of people, including former Vice-President Al Gore, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, Leonardo Di Caprio, and Chris Rock. Similar demonstrations happened around the world in London, Paris, Berlin, and Tokyo, to name a few.
The issue of Climate Change is one that is often overlooked, with such events as the ISIS beheadings and potential war with Russia. However, in the long term, it is one of the most important topics today, and could drastically change our planet for the worst. Another important issue brought up in this article is the constriction placed on protests in America, with specified "Free Speech Zones" that are the only place for protesters to gather. This is a straining, if not a violation, of our First Amendment Right to Peaceful Assembly, a right which has, for a long time, been a great avenue of reform for the common people who cannot spend billions of dollars on lobbying in Congress.
