Anna Speer- A famous landmark is no longer

The whole world is shocked and saddened to see a major landmark, Notre Dame Cathedral, go down in flames today. This icon was  the face of Christianity and France. Built over 850 years ago, this church withstood World War I and World War II (in addition to Hitlers plans to dismantle it) only to be taken down by an apparent accidental fire. There was work being done on the spire of the Cathedral and it seems this is where the fire began soon after Notre Dame was closed for the evening. The Cathedral sits on an island between the banks of the river Seine but unfortunately it took firefighters over 30 minutes to decide how to best tackle the flames despite having a water source so close by. Countless  priceless religious artifacts are now gone with so much more damaged.  Although a bright spot, it appears the bell towers remain.

France officials have declared the famous Cathedral will be rebuilt but there is history that can never be replaced.  This is a sad day indeed.

  2. Seeing this post was very devastating because I had not heard all of the details yet. Thinking of all the loss of the ancient art made me think that we must value that art and culture way more in the future. Do you think changes will be made around the world to secure art? - Kennedy Morrison
