U.N. Waters Down Sexual Violence Procedure Following U.S.-led Push

The U.S., after threatening to withdraw from a U.N. security council action on sexual violence, settled instead on removing a previously agreed-upon phrase which called for donors to support and enforce "sexual and reproductive health", as the phrase was considered supportive of abortion. This was met with contestation from other members of the international organization, with members of the French delegation considering it "intolerable" that abortion would not be permitted to a woman who was raped. This change in policy is suspected to have originated from Mike Pence, who himself has extremely conservative Christian views.
This article was written by Reuters, whom is an excellent source for unbiased reporting from across the world. I believe the change in policy to be despicable, especially with not allowing abortion to women even if they have been raped. It is also reprehensible to strike down such a vague piece of writing which could allude to many things other than abortion, such as treatment for victims of sexual abuse. The development described in this article reminds me of the Roe v. Wade decision surrounding abortion and the subsequent backtrack of that court decision that radically scaled back the powers of abortion, much like what happened with the removal of the contested phrase about sexual violence.
