A United Airlines employee has been criminally charged after she was accused of using racial slurs to scold a black passenger. The employee told the passenger to "stop making monkey faces" and "stop making monkey shines.” The employee also said that she thought the passenger was on drugs. The employee denies a few of these allegations but there are several witnesses to the event that say otherwise. The passenger had gotten off the plane to see whether bags were being unloaded when the employee started yelling at her to come back inside. United Airlines has said they were beginning a termination process for the employee.
Besides the fact that she was yelling racial slurs at people, she shouldn't be yelling at anyone at all. That, already, is an unnecessary reaction. Then, on top of that unprofessionalism, the employee was yelling racial slurs. I genuinely don't have any words. I really don't know how or why people let themselves say or do things they KNOW are offensive and get surprised when people get mad. Beyond that, people will even have the audacity to avoid owning up to their prejudice and they'll try to downplay their actions. If you're racist. Be racist. Don't try to cover that up and make it seem like everyone else is at fault. Sometimes people will say to me that racism and prejudice don't exist anymore. That racism was eliminated after the civil rights movement. It's moments like these that really show how blind some people are to the world around them. It's incredible. I'll get off my soapbox now.

The fact that people still thinks its okay to yell racial slurs at others is appalling. I'm glad that United Airlines is taking action and firing the employee instead of ignoring the incident. - Daniella Castanheira
ReplyDeleteWere there any consequences for this woman? I wonder how much racism exists today is still due to the fact that white people get away for their actions way too often. There are countless examples of this, from yelling racial slurs to killing an innocent person.
ReplyDeleteThis is unacceptable that people would feel that they are ok to shout racial comments at others. United Airlines was right to fire the employee for their actions.
