Church Bombings in Sri Lanka - Sloan Daley

A devastating event just took place in Sri Lanka. Attacks by suicide bombers on Sunday in Sri Lanka murdered over 290 people and wounded about 500 more. The murder victims came from over eight different countries, and included worshipers at Easter Sunday services at three different churches. These churches were targeted by the suicide bombers. So far, the information on the terrorists is limited. However, the police are looking into the radical Islamist group called the National Thowheeth Jama’ath who carried out the tragic attacks on the churches. It is believed that they had help from international militants. Sri Lanka discovered the group of terrorists by the action they took when the bombings took place. Just hours after the churches were bombed, the authorities arrested at least 24 suspects. These precautions were very smart because if they hadn’t arrested all of these people, who knows how far the National Thowheeth Jama’ath was planning to take things.

This event reminds me of another combing at a church. This was called the Birmingham Church Bombing. This event occurred in 1963, on a Sunday morning just before the service was scheduled to start. This bombing was an act by the Klu Klux Klan. Another cult and terrorist group, which is much more well known. These cases are quite similar, however the extremity of the bombings yesterday were worse, because of the number dead. It is sad that as time went on, the fatalities increased. Hopefully this is the last one.
