Cathy Huynh - Insurer sent $33,000 to a man struggling with addiction. He used to cash to go on a binge -- and died.

Summary: Jennifer Alba mourns the death of her son, Joseph, and blames Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina for sending her son a check of $33,399.76. It was for emergency care for his broken jaw he got in a bar fight 7 months before. At 13, Joseph, was suspended for being caught with marijuana. Over the next 16 years, he would spend dozens of nights in jails, cycled through nearly 20 stints in rehab and served 2 prison terms. Over the next 4 days, he made 3 cash withdrawals up to $13,000 and on September 2, 2017, the day after his last withdrawal, he was found dead. Alba says her son was the last person who should have received such a large amount of money. Her son's life mattered, and she's determined to let the powers that be know something must change. "They were sending the checks directly to him and not paying the hospitals," his mother says, "which to me is absolutely absurd, and it's careless, and it's just ridiculous.

Analysis: This article was posted on April 23, 2019, by Wayne Drash. I can connect this article to Nixon's war on drugs, empty promises. This is supposed to have a negative influence on the audience. This article was written, because Jennifer Alba has recently been speaking up for this. This article is important, because not many people are questioning insurance companies.

  1. I completely agree with the mother. Yes, it is a good thing that the insurance company was giving money to help with the man's medical bills, but giving it directly to a person with past drug problems and jail time instead of handling it responsibly is a very questionable policy.
