This article was published on March 30, 2019 by NPR's author Cat Schuknecht. A law limiting legal abortion was passed by Georgia's House of Representatives. The bill limits legal abortion to cut off after six weeks of pregnancy, which is when the baby's heartbeat develops. However, the law makes excuses for rape and incest survivors. This replaces the current law in the state, which cuts off abortion at 20 weeks or during the first half of pregnancy. Furthermore, the bill hasn't been signed recently signed by the governor, Brian Kemp, yet. Since the governor is anti-abortion, if he signs the bill, it will go into effect on the first day of 2020. There has been protests against this bill. The ACLU 9 (American Civil Liberties Union) of Georgia states that they will see the governor in court if the bill passes. Retaliation to the bill is especially prominent by the film industry, who claims the bill will effect their work and their ability to film in Georgia. There has been extreme protests by citizens, also.
This article is directly related to the Roe v Wade case in 1973, which allowed abortion in the first trimester. This case ruled that unduly restrictive state regulation of abortion is unconstitutional and goes against the 14th amendment. Georgia's bill is going against this ruling because it's a state regulating and and placing restrictions on abortion. The "Fetal Heartbeat" bill cuts this first trimester rule in half since it's preventing abortions after 6 weeks instead of 12.
Abortion is not murder since the fetus isn't a sensual, breathing human being yet. A woman should have the right to do what she wants with her own body. Her hopes and dreams are taken away if she's not able to get an abortion. I don't think the bill is reasonable considering that some reasons for getting abortions vary depending on the situation given at hand. This bill will prevent many woman from taking control of their lives, and most women don't even know they're pregnant until after 6 weeks. This bill will also make the actions of abortion more extensive and dangerous to the female wanting to get rid of her baby since we're taking away the safe part of abortions. Moreover, abortion isn't murder considering that the definition of murder is the unlawful killing of one human being done by another person. With abortion, murder isn't as quite accurate and comparable.
