George Mendonsa, the sailor in the photogrpah, died early Sunday morning on February 17 at his assissted living facility in Middletown, Rhode Island. He was suffereing from severe congestive heart failure. he would've turned 96 on the 19th of February 9 (two days later). This picture was taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt, and it signifies the victory over Japan, VJ Day.
