a chinese woman nicknamed the “queen of ivory” has been jailed for 15 years for elephant ivory trafficking related crimes over the course of a couple years. Tanzanian officials found yang guilt of smuggling 860 elephant tusks that are worth over 6 million dollars combined. this landmark ruling marks one of the cruelist punishments against animal smuggling, especially to a high profile asian woman working in africa with many connections. Tanzania is considered the ground zero for elephant poaching, with over 60% of their elephant population being killed by poaching from 2009 to 2014. yang worked in the country for many years as a translator and later in the government till she was finally caught and ruled guilty for her many crimes against humanity. this article and story relates to the oil industry in the early 20th century because it used a lot of natural resources and was a huge industry for a while.
China is normally pretty lax about animal smuggling, so I’m glad she is in jail. This story reminds me of why Roosevelt created more national parks.
