ExxonMobil is looking to use Microsoft’s cloud technology to help it gain advantage on the fast moving oil boom. ExxonMobil is the worlds largest public trade oil company, and they are saying their partnership with this technological company will change the energy industry. Exxon’s use with Microsoft is that it will help make faster drilling decisions, prioritize personnel developments, detect leaks, and monitor greenhouse gas emissions. The oil boom, in the Permian basin, is fast moving business and is complex with rich data, making it the perfect match for the partnership. Exxon said they expect to make billions of dollars in value over the next decade. Microsoft is also getting some success with this too! Their platform, which competes with Amazon’s Web Services, is gaining lots of acclaim. Wall Street is happy with this partnership because even though oil production has skyrocketed Exxon has been struggling. With this technology, and shale assets, all the money Exxon has put into these partnerships is starting to finally pay off.
This article created by Matt Egan, CNN, was published on Sunday, February 24th. I had no prior knowledge about this partnership, nor do I know very much about the oil industry in the first place. I do know though that decisions like these, if successful, will help us to develop a better world. This article makes me think about Rockefeller and his oil industry. Rockefeller, and his Standard Oil, dominated the industry with their developments, money, and technology. I feel like the partnership between Microsoft and ExxonMobil, will revolutionize the oil world, and it will create a new generation of business. I’m not saying that this match will make Exxon dominate the industry, but it will give it “Rockefeller like” qualities. The audience is most definitely the people in the business. As American citizens, I don’t understand what the oil industry is like, and what it takes to be successful. Therefore, I believe the text was aimed more towards oil industry peoples. The importance and purpose of this article is that there is ground breaking developments happening in the oil industry. They will help create a safer and better home for the American economy. With a healthy economy, nation will thrive.
