Last night, for the first time in more than three decades, two African American women (Hannah Beachler and Ruth E. Carter) were the first to win Oscars in their categories. Hannah Beachler was the production design winner while Ruth E. Carter was the costume design winner. Both of their work was featured in Black Panther.
I remember watching both of these women winning and feeling ecstatic not only for them, but my entire community. The fact that they are the first means so much for the future of film and in many ways they are paving the way for future women in the film industry. This story can be compared to when Hattie McDaniel was the first black woman to win an Oscar in 1939.
