Ana Suda and Martha Hernandez, two women from Montana, are suing US Customs and Border Protection officers for detaining them at a gas station last year for simply speaking in Spanish while buying eggs and milk. Both women are nurses assistants and have been living in Montana for many years.
This article relates to US history because the officers have clearly violated these women's personal rights such as equal protection and treatment under the law (14th amendment) and illegal search and seizure (4th amendment). It comes down to the fact that detaining someone solely for speaking Spanish is the same as stopping someone solely because of their race, which is illegal. The women, having been publically humiliated and feel as though their race is being criminalized, filed a lawsuit this week.
