This article was published on February 15, 2019. President Donald Trump's going to declare a national emergency to build the wall bordering Mexico to avoid another government shutdown. This was an attempt to bypass congress, which refused to approve the $5.7 billion for the wall. This action caused many Democrats and Republicans to voice concern for Trump's "gross abuse of power."Declaring a national emergency will allow the president to bypass Congress and use other funds to build the wall. To declare a national emergency, the nation needs to be in a crisis which Trump claims is the large flow of immigrants from Mexico. Trump's actions will surely get attacked in court challenges which means his idea of a national emergency will not work.
The fact that the president can declare a national emergency to bypass congress just to get what he wants is disgusting. Declaring immigration a crisis isn't a good reason to debate a national emergency given that the amount of incoming immigrants have been lower today compared to the past few years.
The National Emergencies Act was declared on September 14, 1976 and allowed the President to gain the power to declare national emergency powers to bypass congress. This power has been used in previous presidencies, including Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. The United State's is going through 31 different emergencies at this moment.
