On Sunday, Devin Kelley(26) walked into a Texas church and then proceeded to shoot and kill 26 people and leave around 20 more injured. He also fired at crying children in the church. Not surprisingly, Kelley has had a long series of red flags that show him as dangerous and unstable. Kelley has been reported of domestic abuse to his now ex-wife, sexual assault, beating up his own dog in the head and chest, and has had a history of stalking his ex-girlfriends. Did I also mention that Kelley escaped from a mental health facility in 2012? "Everything we know about domestic violence predicted this could happen," said Lori Post, a domestic violence researcher at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. "This is not mental illness. He has a personality disorder, and that disorder is consistent with psychopathy, given prior charges of domestic violence, animal abuse and sexual predatory behavior." "Everyone was saying 'Be quiet. It's him. It's him.' Then he yelled out, 'Everybody die,' and he started shooting again," said Roseanne Solis, who was at the church. "If someone had listened to me and all the other women he hurt... this could have been prevented," said Victoria Fillmore, who went to school with Kelley(and has reported him groping her and calling her derogatory names, but nobody did anything about it).

This is horrifying! I feel like the fact that this happened at a church makes it even more saddening. The fact that other people predicted something like this happening is crazy. If they had been listened to, this may have not happned.

ReplyDeleteIt's insane that here were all the signals saying that he shouldn't have been able to acquire the weapons he got. The fact that people knew what he was capable of, and didn't do anything is aggravating. This could have easily been foreshadowed and probably even prevented.

ReplyDeleteSo, I'm going to go a little different rout from these to comments and say it probably wouldn't be that easy to see the red flags and prevent this cratsophy. No one expects a shooting to happen at church 1, 2- if getting a gun is so easy there needs be a whole change with that. Needing to change laws and make new ones and that won't happen in a quick manner, though, it is something that needs to happen (getting a gun easily-I'm not saying no one should own a gun-that's a whole different argument). 3- The President thought that Kelly killed these people because of a mental illness, not even mentioning psychopathic behaviors, meaning people need to realize psychopaths aren't just in movies and that they could be people we regularly interact with- Psycho doesn't mean bad. And finally there are terrible men and women out there who will beat their pets and loved ones, but that does not mean they are capable of killing them let alone 26 people and hoping for more. I just think after something bad happened, we all just to a conclusion on how we could've stopped this from happening. Bad things happens and sometimes it can't be prevented (though Kelly gaining access to a gun could've been somewhat prevented), with the knowledge we have now we can work on making sure something like this will not happen again.
This could’ve been prevented and that’s what makes this so heartbreaking. These people wouldn't have lost their lives if the proper attention would’ve been given.
ReplyDeletePeople often say that gun control won't do anything because criminals will still find a way, so if we're using that mindset was is the purpose in having any laws? By all means, let's get rid of all of them since all of them are ignored by a fraction of citizens anyways. The thought of abandoning all laws is ridiculous and reckless, just like abandoning the concept of gun control. We are being proven again and again that this issue is growing, but instead we turn it towards immigration issues and mental health instead of firearms.
