On Sunday, Shalane Flanagan won the New York marathon with the time of 2 hours, 26 minutes, an 53 seconds. Flanagan is the first American woman to win the marathon in 40 years. Flanagan was in tears by the time she reached the finished line. The last American woman who won was Miki Gorman in 1977. The race was held with heightened security due to the terror attack that killed 8 people on a bike path in Manhattan las week.
In a sport that heavily dominated by men, it is so incredible how this woman was able to win this. She had been training for years, she's an Olympic Medalist, Flanagan absolutely deserved this. I have so much respect for the runners who even show up to these popular marathon on account for the Boston Marathon bombing on 2013.
However, Shalane Flanagan took home the 1st place medal, marking a new record in marathon history for American women.
