Henry Haas-Giving Trump the Bird

A woman was supposedly fired for flipping off trump earlier today. She stated that the presidential vehicles were returning from the golf course to the White House and she happened to be biking along that road. She said her finger “spoke” for her, and that she afterwards told her employer, as she figured it would have gotten back to him anyway. Her boss stated it was a violation of their social relations policy, and she brushed it off, saying things like I had to do it.
I’m not sure how much I agree with this persons story. It’s perfectly alright to voice your opinion, whether it be positive or negative, however her getting upset about being fired doesn’t really make sense to me. The company has a policy, as every buisness does, and there has to be a system of consequences for it to function properly. This, as a result, ended with her being fired. I’m all for free speech, but when under contract and policy consequences can and do come into play. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

  1. Jon Slavinskas- An individual does have their right to freedom of expression, but a company policy of acceptable behavior can rule whether or not that expression is of the kind that the company wants as a representation of that company. Think swearing in front of a teacher. You can do it, but there will be administrative consequences.

  2. If the company has a policy, and she broke it, the company has every right to fire her. One of the things that sets America apart from other countries is our freedom to say whatever we want about our government, but if the company doesn't want their employees flipping off the President, I think that is respectable. I'm not saying that what she or the company did was wrong, but if she broke policy, she has to take the consequences for her actions.

  3. Though I would do the same, I do understand why she had to be fired over the matter. Consequences do come from these kind of actions, no matter how badly someone wants to flip off the president (because, trust me, I want to flip off the guy).
