Depression Strikes Today's Teen Girls Especially Hard - Emma Reyna

Summary:

In a recent study that was published in the journal, Pediatrics, states how teenage girls are excessively more prone to depression than teenage boys. The study then explains how girls of adolescent age may experience severe depression due to the dependence of social media in this generation. When a girl is exposed to posts on social media such as Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, etc. that feature an ideal women with a defined figue and petite body they are then prone to being critical of themselves and could lead to an increase in depression if they do not meet such standards. This just shows how social media can create this ideal identity of ourselves and how we are supposed to look like.Even though many girls choose to ignore such standards this perfect ideal body and mindset it always going to be there, in the back of their minds influencing their  actions even if they don't notice  it themselves right away. With the scroll of many posts through feed it is invetiable  that it can't define you because in a way it does whether it's just the slightest or if it leads to a more saddening realization.

Analysis/Sythesis:

This article was quite saddening and was meant to show how social media can shape how we see ourselves and how it can lead to severe depression, especially in adolescent teenage girls. Although the article states how social media is the main drive in the increasing depression rate for young girls I believe other factors may also contribute to such statistics. Even though I never have had depression due to social media I do understand why it can do such a thing. When I look through any kind of social media and I'm faced with a picture that challenges the views of the way I should look  in particular I feel ashamed at times. I feel the need to look prettier or lose weight although it doesn't sadden me it just shows how social media controls us to have this ideal image of ourselves. And I'm happy to say body positivity posts have been increasing through social media and how one shouldn't be sad if they don't meet certain standards and to love themselves nothing less. And with that said I hope posts like this reach more women in particular so they don't feel the need be depressed and sad.
