STD Rates Reach Record High in United States by Macey Kanaman 8th Period

Summary: Research has shown STD rates reached the highest they have ever been in the U.S. last year. The most common STDs include chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis which have all extensively increased. All of these diseases can be treated with antibiotics, however scientists have found that the bacterium that causes gonorrhea is becoming resistant to the antibiotics. Many of the new STD reports affect younger people, between the ages of 15 and 24. To make matters worse, STD clinics have been forced to close due to lack of funding. Therefore, less people are able to get help.

Analysis: I am sad to hear that some people don't get the help that they need due to the lack of funding for the clinics. Although there are many ways to prevent STDs and I believe those should be emphasized to help a decline in the diseases. I am relating this issue to the AIDS outbreak in the 1980s. Many people contracted the disease and faced judgment. Today things are different and people are more open and are able to receive help. It's hard to think about all of the people who may have gone untreated due to the fear of others finding out about their disease. Hopefully in the future, more clinics will be funded and more people will be able to be treated.

  1. I agree it's sad to see all the people that don't get help, and to hear about how high the rates are becoming

  2. They should have more ways and options to treat it to help people because it can be life threatening. I also believe people should be more aware on the risks of it and protect themselves.

  3. This is very scary. People need to get themselves tested and practice safe sex. STDs are a dangerous think to trot around. They are some of the worse things you can contract.

  4. This is so sad and sickening. In order to prevent this, we need to start really teaching about all sex and safety thereof to kids in public schools. If we educate about the reality rather than "teaching abstinence", we might get somewhere. Another awful part is that the clinics that would normally help these patients are being shut down because a lot of them also serve as abortion clinics. The whole thing is terrible and I hope things get better soon.

  5. The reason this is happening is partially because of society's taboo on sex, but also about people creating stronger strains of diseases by not finishing their antibiotics after they seem to be cured. Doctors and Pharmacists need to fully impress upon people the importance of finishing their prescription antibiotics.

  6. I totally agree with what Linnea said about sex education. People think that teaching abstinence will prevent teens from having sex and getting STD's and becoming pregnant. This actually does the complete opposite. Teens are going to have sex, that's just a fact. Without proper edifying about the subject, they don't know about protection measures that must be taken, and therefore fall victim to receiving STD and having unplanned pregnancy. Yet some people still insist on teaching abstinence. It's not only illogical, but dangerous.
