Scotland Embraces Gay Politicians in a Profound Cultural Shift : Kate Kahle

Scotland, which was once almost the capital of the first world of social conservatism, has come to embrace diversity in sexuality in the span of only one generation.
Homosexuality was illegal in Scotland until 1980, and as recently as 2000 billboards were up in Scotland, petitioning for homosexuality to be banned to be discussed in schools, to "Protect Our Children".
Today, the leaders of 3/5 scottish political parties, 4 minister of the scottish government, and the Secretary of State for Scotland are all openly gay. 8% of the scottish parliament identifies as gay, which the highest proportion for any national legislature anywhere.
Nathan Sparling, campaign lead for Scotland's National Party, regularly performs in drag.
The change in Scotland is emblematic of the change in the ways LGBT individuals are viewed in western cultures.

I think the shift in Scotland proves that even if discrimination is deeply rooted in a culture, if acceptance is encouraged strongly enough it doesn't have to take many generations to make equality happen. In this day and age, change can happen more rapidly than ever, especially cultural change. I am also so happy that the Scottish Parliament has a number of LGBT individuals very near the percent of LGBT individuals in the population, which means that their government is very representative. I hope America follows in their footsteps to having a gayer government.
