Abbey Winiger- Innocent Black Man Shot Caught on Footage
SUMMARY- Police released two videos Friday showing an officer fatally shooting an unarmed black man in a San Diego suburb and said they hoped showing the footage would ease escalating tensions. The video shows the police officer shooting the unarmed man four times almost immediately after Alfred Olango, 38, suddenly raised both hands to chest level and took what was described as a shooting stance. The shooting occurred almost one minute after Olango's sister called saying he was acting "erratically". The videos were released after three nights of unruly and violent protests in El Cajon. On the eve of a large demonstration organized by clergy and supporters of Olango's family, who had pressured authorities to show the footage of the fatal encounter. On Thursday night, an officer was struck in the head by a brick hurled by a protester.
ANALYSIS/SYNTHESIS- This story is so saddening to hear. Prior to reading this article I had not heard about Alfred Olango and his story. This article is so saddening to hear, and to know that things like these are still happening in the world. I wish that the media would focus more on stories like this and show how the police are victimizing innocent people. This reminds me of the Black Lives Matter Movement, and how crucial it is to our everyday lives. That we need to be aware of what is going on in our society and see how we can help.

I completely agree! The Black Lives Matter Movement does need more attention and there needs to be less prejudice against African Americans. Although, I do believe that not all cops are prejudice. I don't think it was right for that cop to get struck in the head with a brick. Ironically now people are also prejudice against cops. Both problems need to end.
ReplyDeleteIt's truly sad how many stories like this exist. We need to unify to stop the killing on innocent black men. This is not a time to point fingers, we need to fix this very important problem #blacklivesmatter
