Texas Refuses Refuges by Shelby Linker, 8th period

I'm sure as we all know, Paris was attacked this weekend and the tragic incident has brought everyone together to mourn and to support each other. Due to these serious attacks, many state governors have refused to accept Syrian refugees into their state, Texas has now joined the list of states. With all of the conflict arising in middle east, many people have been forced to flee from their homes and find refuge in other neighboring countries, many of those countries becoming overwhelmed quickly with the large influx of refugees. America has been pressured into accepting 60 thousand refugees but will accept about 10 thousand.

I can't say I completely understand being forced out of my home country but I am sympathetic towards them. Lets take a broader look at the situation, with this many refugees streaming into all of the neighboring European countries I can understand their worry for their own citizens. Accepting refugees can threaten the safety of both citizens involved, cause economic problems, create high tensions, and put a huge strain on the governments of the countries that are accepting them. There are now 26 U.S. states refusing to accept refugees. Again, I'm able to understand their stand points, it may seem heartless but with what just happened everyone is on edge and looking out for those close to them. I personally can't blame them for not wanting to immediately accept refugees but I'm saddened by the fact that we as people have such trust issues and that some people have caused us to be untrusting of others. Although I accept their decision for not accepting refugees right now, I don't believe in generalizing Islam people for what  ISIS is doing, if you use that as your excuse for not accepting these people into your state you have some serious prejudice and just issues in general. We have no way of checking to see if the people we are helping are of no threat to people nearby and because ISIS supporters are unknown to us, we have no way to confirm the safety of everyone. We as a country always want to take as many steps as possible to ensure the most safety of everyone. I think we also have to remember that some refugees aren't the easiest to put up with and some aren't able to understand the strain that they put on those countries. Some have complained about being treated worse than animals but the countries have been pushed to that point. This reminds we when many German and Irish immigrants/refugees sought America as their safe haven but the Irish ended up being loathed and many Americans saw it as an attack on American jobs.

I hope that we will be able to accept these people into our country without prejudice and without fear of people's safety, but I do accept their reasonable choices for now.

  1. I agree with Shelby completely. But I also think that these refugees have been through enough, and not allowing them into some states is just giving them another hoop to jump through. Imagine if we just helped them out, that good image of America would replace the negative one some people from the middle east have of our culture.

  3. ISIS is extremely powerful and sneaky. I think America is doing the right thing with the limitation of Syrian refugees, but on the other hand, it does seem a bit heartless to not be willing to provide shelter for these refugees after what they've lived through. It's a tough call and either choice is reasonable in my opinion.
