terrence cody charged with animal cruelty -Avery Yoss 4th

On monday, Terrence Cody was charged with animal cruelty and was found guilty. He turned himself last February. He supposedly didn't provide the right nutrition and medication for his dog, and it was said to be on purpose so he could torture the dog. He was part of the Baltimore Ravens, an NFL football player, but he was recently released during the team's offseason.
I feel really bad for the dog. My question is, how was it decided that Cody poorly taking care of his dog was intentional? I don't know much of the story, but I feel like there should be more proof to determine that it was defiantly intentional.
