The Supreme Court decided Friday that they will hear a case concerning restrictions that Texas puts on abortion providers. Abortion was ruled a right in the 1973 case, Roe v. Wade. This made abortion legal in all states, but gave states power to regulate clinics. Many states are now abusing that power, passing laws that intentionally restrict and shut down women's health centers, which leaves thousands of women without proper medical care. The ruling is due in June, and what the court decides will determine what other states are allowed to do.
States manipulating or protesting federal laws has been a problem for as long as the US has been a country. Our very first political parties, the Federalists and Anti-federalists, are an excellent example. The Anti-federalists were strong supporters of states' rights and the Federalists supported the federal government's ruling. In theory, states' rights could be useful, but in reality, states are allowed to manipulate laws far too often.

I believe issued that would affect the mass American public should be left to the Supreme Court, such as abortion, without states being allowed to manipulate it

ReplyDeleteI find this article hard because abortion is such a difficult topic. I battle in my mind about this issue because people should have the right to do what they want with that child especially if it came by means that they didn't want like rape. On the other hand, I believe that these children are alive and deserve to live. I love your connection to US History with the Federalists and Anti-Federalists.
